Horace C. Alger (1857-1906) was a banker from Sheridan, Wyoming, and mayor of Sheridan in 1889 and a candidate for Governor of Wyoming in 1898. Cody, Beck, and Alger were responsible for developing the Shoshone Irrigation Company. Theo Heckert was a railroad contractor who had a "grading outfit" used in construction of the canal [See Patrick's The Best Little Town by a Dam Site, p19]. E. van Dreveldt, a civil engineer, platted the town of Cody City along with Charles Hayden in October 1895. William E. Hymer (~1853-1933) was one of the early members of the Shoshone Land and Irrigation Company.Cody, William Frederick, 1846-1917Letter from William F. Cody to George T. Col. W. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill), President.Nate Salsbury, Vice-Pres't and Manager.John M. Burke, . . . General Manager.Albert E. Scheible, . . . Business Manager.Jule Keen, . . . Treasurer.Rutland. July. 271Dear George—
See my letter to Alger— as feed is so high in Basin2 better wait till about Sep 1st before commencing work— but have surveying done this month. I cantcan't find out yet if any surveying has been done. I suppose that south line had been surveyed from HeadGate. Heckart says no. and it will take Van Dreveldt and three good men not ex bank clerks ten days to do it. So you see I get so many different reports I am completely upset. If you can find out if there has been anything done you can do more than I can— Get Hymer out of office sure— And letslet's get a man there who can tell the truth at least—
Under stand Palmer- Capt.3 wants in—
Best wishes—CodyNote 1: The year is not inscribed by Cody but is 1895 as determined by the Routes List: Buffalo Bill's Wild West performed in Rutland, Vermont, on July 27, 1895. Note 2: Big Horn Basin, Wyoming.Note 3: "Palmer- Capt." is unidentified.
