Image: Necktie with Flags

In the latter nineteenth century, American Indian beadworkers began to copy the American flag as a decorative motif, a practice that continued into the twentieth century. This particular necktie, probably made specifically to sell at the exposition, captured that decorative motif and symbolized that country that the Lakotas represented.
