Note 3: In 1897 Beck traveled to Washington, D.C., and called on Phoebe Hearst, wife of California senator and Comstock Lode magnet George Hearst. On behalf of Shoshone Irrigation Company Beck managed to sell the Hearsts an indemnity bond of $30,000 for the irrigation project; repayment was to be made over five years at 7-1/2% interest. [back]
