But if our own folk wandered forth, others poured into their vacant places. The Earl's Court Exhibition was filled with a most orderly crowd, sauntering among the flowers or sitting at ease listening to the footguards, or enjoying themselves over tea or lager beer or still more solid refreshments, or cheering the exploits of the heroes, American and Asiatic, who manoeuvred in strange fashion or performed weird antics under the guidance of Buffalo Bill. Major Burke's mighty soul must have swelled with exultation as he looked round the crowded amphitheatre.
