Eine Antrittsvisite bei Buffalo Bill.
Wild-West nennt der grosse, schlanke und schöne Amerikaner Cody, der den Beinamen Buffalo Bill trägt, seine Truppe, die sich vorgestern Nacht auf einem Riesenterrain am Kurfürstendamm häuslich niedergelassen hat. Häuslich ist eigentlich nicht ganz richtig; „zeltlich” müsste man sagen, denn 39 Zelte sind's, die den 200 Indianern, Cowboys, Musikanten und Schützen, die den 21 Büffeln und weit über 200 Pferden Unterkunft gewähren. Chipka how! Also zuvor zum Gruss. Für Alle, die noch nicht mit dem Cheyenne oder dem Arapahowe-Indianisch auf vertrautem Fusse stehen, sei gesagt, dass Chipka how im Sinne der Skalp-Sprache ”guten Tag, Bruder” heisst. Wir wussten's auch noch nicht, aber Mr. Broncho Bill, der Indianer-Dolmetscher, war so freundlich, uns auf Yankee-Englisch zu erklären, dass die Indianer gar so nette Leute sind, dass sie Jeden gleich mit Bruder anreden. Das Wort Bill heisst Wilhelm, was hier gleich, um den Laut eines geheimnisvollen Zaubers zu entkleiden, erwähnt sein mag. Buffalo Bill bedeutet also „Büffel-Wilhelm”, eine Bezeichnung, die soviel heimathlichen Klang in sich birgt, dass wir Mr. Cody selbstverständlich von Herzen gern mit dem Zuruf „Chipka how, guten Tag, Bruder!” willkommen heissen. Und wir glauben, die Berliner werden es alle thun. Gross genug ist das Terrain, auf welchem die Schiess-, Reit- und Tanz-Vorstellungen gegeben werden, so dass nach und nach ganz Berlin drauf Platz hat, und nett arrangirt scheint die ganze Sache auch zu sein. Mit dem praktischen Blick des Amerikaners—und was für einen schönen Blick hat Buffalo Bill noch dazu—hat er hier Alles arrangirn lassen; weit und breit, würdig und bequem, die Tribünen geschützt vor Regen und Sonnenschein, und Laubschatten in den Wandelgängen. Einen sachkundigen Arrangeur hat er in Herrn v. Schirp gefunden, der es zu Wege gebracht, dass draussen in Wild-West Post, Telephon, Polizei- und Sanitätswache installirt ist, dass grosse Restaurationsanlagen, ein russischer Liquer-Ausschank, eine Champagnerquelle (A. De Roche-Faloid, nicht übel) angelegt sind, dass ein veritables Café Bauer neben den Farbigen, die draussen zu sehen sind, seine „Schwarzen” verkauft, dass Löser und Wolff einen Pavillon, selbstverständlich einen Eck-Pavillon, anders thut's die Firma nicht, hat; das Alles wird sehr angenehm empfunden werden. Wir unsererseits waren durch eine kleine Aufmerksamkeit noch besonders erfreut, die man in Dierschau oder Pasewalt gewiss nicht antrifft und auch auf dem beinahe verewigten Schützenplatze nicht fand: es ist sogar ein besonderes Pressezimmer hergerichtet. Buffalo Bill scheint auch trotz seiner 54 Jahre gegen das zarte Geschlecht aufmerksam zu sein; er hat nämlich auch für „sweets” gesorgt, für Süssigkeiten und Näschereien, für echt indianisches Konfekt. Sioux-Bäcker werden diese sweets in einem Zelte auf gut indianisch zusammenbacken und—man sieht, wie die Kultur selbst die Rothhäute beleckt, was bei Süssigkeiten nicht anders zu erwarten ist—den Damen zum Verkauf anbieten. Es wird uns versichert, dass die Indianer wahre Muster von Sauberkeit sind; der mitanwesende Kaffee- und Theekoch, ein einstmaliger italienischer Millionär, der sein Geld in Monte Carlo auf dem grünen Tisch gelassen hat und jetzt grünen Thee für die Söhne der Prairie kocht, sagte uns, dass vom ersten Chef der Indianer, mit dem klangvollen Namen Rockey Bear, an bis zum farbigen Baby hinab auf peinliche Sauberkeit gehalten wird. Nun, wir hatten gestern nicht so viel Zeit, uns bei unserem ersten Besuch in Wild-West von der Richtigkeit dieser Behauptung zu überführen, haben aber doch sehen können, dass Väterchen Rockey Bear sowohl, wie sein Bruder Black Heart, der aber vollständig gelb angemalt ist, Einem nicht vor die Füsse, sondern hübsch zur Seite spuckt. Wie es mit der „peinlichen Sauberkeit” bei den Indianerfrauen steht, haben wir nicht beobachten können. Die Herren Ehemänner haben ihre besseren Hälften nicht mitgebracht und auch die Jungfrauen daheim gelassen. Nur die Frau des Dolmetschers, ein Weib aus dem Indianervolk, ist hier und diese trug sich recht manierlich. Die Frau Doktorin der Truppe, eine 60 jährige Madame Whittaker, hatte einen Rundgang durch Berlin gemacht, wir sahen nur ihren grossen Medizinkasten.
Bei der Truppe befindet sich noch Miss Anny Ockly, eine kühne Schützin, welche bereits soviel Medaillen besitzt, dass sie sich daraus einen Brustpanzer fertigen lassen könnte, ferner einige Reiterinnen amerikanischen Geblüts, deren eine, ein niedlicher Rothkopf, mit einem Cowboy und einem mexikanischen Musikanten „thirty one” spielte, auf gut Deutsch „das 31-Spiel”, eine Variation des 66-Spiels. Man sieht, auch in Wild-West versteht man die Karten zu mischen.

An opening visit at Buffalo Bill
The tall, lean and handsome American Cody, who carries the nickname Buffalo Bill, calls his troupe Wild West. Two nights ago, they settled down with their "homes" at a large area near the Kurfürstendamm. However, "homes" is not quite the correct term; "tents" is more accurate, because there are 39 tents that the 200 Indians, cowboys, musicians and shooters call home, and that give shelter to the 21 buffalo and far over 200 horses. Chipka how! But first the greeting. For everybody who is not completely familiar with the Indian language of Cheyenne or Arapahoe let it be told that Chipka how means "good day, brother" in the scalp language. We did not know either, but Mr. Broncho Bill, the Indian interpreter, was nice enough to explain to us in Yankee English that the Indians are indeed so friendly that they immediately address everybody with 'brother'. The word Bill means Wilhelm, which shall be mentioned here immediately in order to strip away the mysterious magic of its sound. Thus, Buffalo Bill means Büffel-Wilhelm, a term that includes so many connotations of home that we would like to welcome Mr. Cody with a genuine shout of "Chipka how, good day, brother!" And we believe that all of Berlin is going to do it gladly. The area at which the shooting, riding and dance performances will take place is big enough to allow all of Berlin to take a seat, and the entire venue seems to be well organized. With the practical eye typical for Americans—and he is easy on the eyes himself—Buffalo Bill has organized everything; the seating is covered and protected from the rain and sun, and trees are shading the walkways. He has found a knowledgeable organizer in Mr. V. Schirp, who managed to have a post office, phone booth, police station and sick room installed out there in the Wild West. He also ensured the installation of several large restaurant facilities, a Russian liquor stand, a Champagne bar (A.de Roche-Faloid, not bad at all!). An actual branch of Café Bauer is selling its "blacks" right next to the black skins that are seen outside, and Löser und Wolff has erected a pavilion; a corner-pavilion, of course, they do not do it any other way. [1] All of this will be received very warmly. We ourselves were treated to a special little amenity that delighted us indeed, one that will certainly not be provided in Dierschau or Pasewalk and has been overlooked even at the almost timeless Schützenplatz: [2] they even have a special press room! Despite his 54 years, Buffalo Bill seems to be very attentive towards the fairer sex: he has provided sweets and candy, even authentic Indian confections. Sioux chefs will assemble and create these sweets in their tents in the Indian fashion—as you can see, civilization even touches the redskins here, as it is expected when it comes to candy—and they will offer them for sale to the ladies. We are assured that the Indians are true examples of cleanliness; the company's coffee and tea server, a former Italian millionaire who lost his money at the green tables in Monte Carlo and now serves green tea for the sons of the prairie, told us that the Indians are extraordinarily hygienic, starting with their main chief with the resounding name of Rocky Bear all the way down to the colored baby. Well, we didn't have enough time yesterday during our visit to the Wild West to confirm the accuracy of these claims, but we have witnessed how father Rocky Bear as well as his brother Black Heart, whose body was painted entirely in yellow, did not spit right in front of your feet but cleanly to the side. We have not been able to witness how this standard of cleanliness is adhered to among the women. The husbands did not bring their better halves and also left their maidens at home. Only the translator's wife, an Indian woman, is present and behaved quite well-mannered. The medical doctor of the company, the sixty-year-old Madame Whittaker, was out on a trip through Berlin, therefore we only saw her large medicine chest.
Also among the troupe is Miss Anny Ockly, a skilled shot who already owns enough medals in order to have a breast plate made from them; also a few [female] riders of American blood; one of them, a cute redhead, was playing 31 with a cowboy and a Mexican musician, which is a variation of the 66 game. As you can see, even in the Wild West the cards are shuffled.
